Project: Preservation work for Saint Sergius of Radonezh in Chuathbaluk, Alaska
Current Campaign
St. Sergius of Radonezh is located in Chuathbaluk, Alaska along the Kuskokwim River. The church was chosen by ROSSIA as one of the top ten Russian Orthodox Churches in Alaska on which to focus, given the role it plays in the local communities surrounding it.
A condition assessment of the church was prepared in 2003 by the National Park Service which was used to prepare detailed cost estimates. The church contains its original iconostasis and many original nineteenth century icons. These irreplaceable relics are threatened by a failing roof and foundation, inadequate temperature control and fire. The restoration of St. Sergius will be costly and logistically challenging due to its remote location. Materials for the work must be barged in three months in advance to prepare summer projects.
